Main fields of research and expertise

Christian Hartmann got his PhD in 1991 from the University Pierre & Marie Curie, Sorbonne U, France. His research concerned the process of compaction/decompaction for both fine-textured (clay) and coarse-textured soils (i.e. clays < 18% and sands > 65%) at different scales, from the organisation of the elementary constituents to the profile scale. As there is a strong interaction between the soil structure (distribution in space of the solid constituents) part of his work has focused on the mechanisms of root development in laboratory conditions. More recently he focused on (i) the impact of organic amendments on the soil structure and the (ii) the standardisation of soil measures to reduce the measurement uncertainties and increase the reproducibility of physical measures.
